Our mission is to build an informed and engaged community committed to finding sustainable solutions to alleviate hunger, reclaim and repurpose waste and promote the health and well-being of all.
OUR STORY
In September 2014 three North County San Diego residents formed a California nonprofit corporation called ProduceGood. One of the founders, Nita Kurmins, was a graphic artist, website designer and writer who for four years had been implementing an all-volunteer, grassroots program she called CropSwap, whose purpose was to glean backyard fruit to distribute to the hungry and underserved in the county.
The other two founders, Alexandra White, a sales enablement architect, program manager, curriculum developer and writer; and Jerilyn White, a marketer, writer and former senior executive of for- and non-profits, were also daughter and mother. They had been working on a business plan for a nonprofit that would provide opportunities to improve people’s well-being through social engagement, reciprocity and giving to larger community needs.
Committed also to the good works of CropSwap, for which they had been volunteering, the three began to recognize the strength of combining the charitable goals of both concepts into a single entity. And so ProduceGood was incorporated as a California non-profit. We recieved our 501 (c )(3) status in May 2015.
What we do
In San Diego County, 1 in 6 people go to bed hungry every night and to help feed the food insecure and underserved, we glean backyard fruit throughout North County. After almost five years and a collaboration with Feeding America San Diego, we have been able to increase our distribution capacity. To take CropSwap to the next level, we are putting practices in place to dramatically increase the number of growers, picks and volunteers.
Additionally, we are committed to finding other sustainable solutions to alleviate hunger, reclaim and repurpose waste and promote the health and well-being of community members through social engagement, reciprocity and giving.
We operate out of the Leichtag Ranch in Encinitas. A leader in North County’s sustainability and zero waste movement, the Leichtag Foundation supports programs and educational activities that connect people to community, food, the land, and social justice. We are proud to have been chosen as a Hub member, receiving this space as a gift-in-kind.
